20 Years E.M.B.L.-HSG

20 years Executive M.B.L.-HSG - One of Switzerland’s Windows to the World

A few years ago the Financial Times named the Executive Program of the University of St. Gallen HSG in International and European Business Law as one of three of the most innovative programs for aspiring leaders in law and business. The program, which was launched in 1996, constitutes a window to the world for Switzerland. This year the Executive M.B.L.-HSG celebrates its 20 year anniversary with a high-caliber conference in Zurich on “Regulation of the financial services industry and its impact on competition and the economy as a whole”. Speakers include the former Vice-President of the European Commission Joaquín Almunia, the longtime former Luxembourg Finance Minister Luc Frieden and EFTA Court President Carl Baudenbacher.

The Executive M.B.L.-HSG is taught in the lingua franca of globalisation, English. It functions as a flying classroom and disposes of a global faculty which consists of European, American, Chinese and Japanese professors, lawyers, in-house counsel, judges, politicians, officials and economists from business and academia. The program starts in St. Gallen and then makes a trip around the world with the destinations Zurich (Finance), Frankfurt (M&A), Luxembourg (Procedure), Brussels (Competition Law), Geneva (Law, Lobbying & Public Affairs), New York (International Taxation), Cambridge, MA (Negotiation), Shanghai (Business and Law in China), Tokyo (Business and Law in Japan) and Austin, TX (IT and Energy Law). Beside top universities like NYU, Harvard, University of Texas, Fudan (China) and Waseda (Japan), cooperation partners include significant law firms such as Freshfields, Norton Rose Fulbright and White & Case.

Studying on the spot not only imparts knowledge in the respective fields, but also familiarises candidates with the corresponding genius loci. The Executive M.B.L.-HSG was one of the first post-graduate programs in Europe which was based on the dichotomy of intramural (i.e. lecture hall) and extramural (i.e. virtual) studies. The lessons are interactive, and educational objectives are the transfer of knowledge, skills and social competence. A key feature of the Executive M.B.L.-HSG is the mix of lawyers and non-lawyers, which  aims at guaranteeing a program as close to daily practice as possible. Candidates complete their studies alongside career and family. Thanks to the flexible structure (5 basic and 5 optional modules), the Executive M.B.L.-HSG may easily be combined with a challenging professional activity. Due to the balanced mix of academic and practical knowledge, candidates can apply their new know-how directly in their daily work. This creates an immediate added value, also for the employer.

The Executive M.B.L.-HSG has educated more than 600 graduates from 31 countries in the first 20 years of its existence. Alumni include, for example, Othmar Karas (Member of the European Parliament), Margret Suckale (Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF and President of the German Chemical Industry Association), Nadja Ceregato (Head of Legal and Compliance of Raiffeisenbank, Switzerland), Elisabeth Roegele (Executive Director of Securities Supervision at the German BaFin) and the Moscow and St. Petersburg lawyer Sergey Slagoda.

After completion of the program, Executive M.B.L.-HSG graduates continue to benefit from the HSG international network through the Executive M.B.L.-HSG Alumni Association. They stay in contact via the Web-based Who’s Who. Annual meetings with a top-class program in different capitals support life-long-learning and provide an additional platform for network building.
