by lic.iur. Nadja Ceregato, Attorney-at-law, E.M.B.L.-HSG alumna 2002/2003 and former President of the E.M.B.L.-HSG Alumni Association

This year’s alumni event was my last annual event as president and was therefore a very special event. In addition we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the E.M.B.L.-HSG program.

On Thursday afternoon we met at the hotel Marriott where most of the participants stayed in order to get to our first fieldtrip, the FIFA.

Oliver Jaberg, Head of Corporate Legal and HSG Alumnus gave us a very intriguing speech about the FIFA. Participants very actively participated in the discussion. The presentation was followed by a guided tour through the FIFA building which was astonishing. Right after the tour we headed back to the Marriott Hotel where we were welcomed with a nice reception.

Before the dinner we held our general assembly where we informed our alumni about what was done the last year and where we want to go.

Furthermore, my successor was first announced to the alumni. Matthias Schmid introduced the goal of the alumni association to the audience and motivated them to be an ambassador of the program and spread the program to prospects. It’s very important that the program gains publicity in order to maintain the high value of the title E.M.B.L.-HSG. After the assembly the participants met for a nice dinner at the Sächsilüta-Saal of the Hotel Marriott and sat together until late.

On Friday, the outstanding conference with high-caliber speakers took place. The topic was ‘Regulation of the Financial Services Industry and its Impact on Competition and the Economic as a whole’.

The first panel was chaired by Dr. David B. Rockwell and covered the history of the financial crisis of 2007/2008 and posed the question to the panelists how this crisis came about? Speakers were Jeffrey Golden, Hans Kuhn and René Bösch.

The second panel was chaired by David Green and covered the topic how the authorities did react. Luc Frieden, former Minister of Finance of Luxembourg, Prof. Joaquin Almunia, former EU commissioner and Daniel Zuberbühler, former Director of the EBK and member of the Board of the FINMA participated in this panel.

Further the conference covered the question how a financial crisis might be avoided in a third panel. Answers to this question was provided by Prof. Manuel Ammann as presider and Dr. Eva Hüpkes and Urs Zulauf. Last but not least the conference covered the question, what does this all mean to competition. Dr. Franz Hoffet chaired the last panel with Dr. Andreas von Bonin and Helen Jenkins as speakers.

After the conference we enjoyed an unforgettable anniversary party at the Papiersaal, Sihlcity with an outstanding dinner and Eliane Bürki and her Alpine Horn and the famous band Piano Beat with the energetic singer Börni.

Furthermore, we had an interview, where Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Carl Baudenbacher, Matthias Schmid, new President of the alumni organisation and myself answered to questions posed by Mascha Santschi.

On Saturday I did not join the program during the day. However I have was told that the city tour was fantastic especially as the weather was gorgeous. Also the boat tour on the beautiful lake of Zurich was a great experience.

The event concluded on Saturday night with a Gala-Dinner at the Savoy Hotel in Zürich where we had another great chance to exchange with other alumni.

I did get to know new alumni but also met a lot of friends I met during the last alumni events since I graduated from the program 2003. I very much enjoy these alumni meetings every year and plan to further participate although I’m not president anymore. I do think that this is a great opportunity to enhance the personal network and it’s always a very fun event. This said I would like to thank all alumni for the confidence and support I got during the last years. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you at different future events.
